A bingo hall that had a good run for over 30 years has finally closed its doors. The hall at St. Brendan Catholic Church in New Haven, Connecticut closed its doors after lack of proceeds and reduced profits caused its games to cease. “It’s a very tight community of people who play,” said Dale Bruckhart, co-chairman of bingo for the church.

He went on to say, “People were obviously disappointed. We had some people who literally had been playing for 30 years.” While fundraisers and attendance can bring in up to $20,000 a year on a good year, this past year the hall has not reached its $15,000 minimum target.

One of the biggest reasons for the lack of income has been increased attendance at casinos rather than traditional halls, with player numbers dwindling. While loyal players continue to play the games, many others prefer to try online games or go to a casino. “The profit return has reached a point where you are almost barely breaking even every session,” says Bruckhart. Meanwhile, many loyal players have been saddened at the news.

“I hate to see it close, but it’s inevitable,” said Mary Farricielli, who was a regular fixture at St. Brendan’s bingo for 30 years. Farricielli, who is from East Haven, was a caller at the hall for many years, and enjoyed her bingo games there immensely.
